RAD PREFABS · Technical Insight
When 20-year protection isn't enough — meet the 50-year solution.
When you specify steel structures for your project, corrosion protection is often the difference between a 20-year solution and a 50-year investment. Traditional hot-dip galvanised (GI) steel has been the industry workhorse for decades, but today, a smarter, more durable alternative is transforming the way we build.
At RAD PREFABS, we choose Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium (ZAM) coated steel as our standard for light-gauge structures. Why? Because it offers 5 to 20 times better corrosion resistance than conventional GI steel, combined with a unique self-healing edge protection that no other coating can match.
Let's break down the technology, the data, and the real-world benefits.
ZAM (also called Zn-Al-Mg or zinc-magnesium-aluminium) is a steel sheet coated with a ternary alloy that typically contains:
Zn
Zinc
Provides cathodic (sacrificial) protection to exposed steel
Al
Aluminium
Forms a dense, stable oxide barrier that resists corrosion
Mg
Magnesium
Activates the alloy, enables self-healing at cut edges
Common compositions include Zn-5-6% Al-3% Mg, or high-aluminium variants like 53% Al-43% Zn-2% Mg. Regardless of the exact ratio, all ZAM coatings share the same triple-action protection mechanism.
| Feature | Traditional GI | ZAM Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Protection Mechanism | Zinc sacrificial only | Zinc + Aluminium barrier + Magnesium activation |
| Corrosion Resistance (same coating weight) |
Baseline | 5 to 20 times longer (salt-spray >9,000 hours) |
| Edge Protection | Limited, requires post-treatment | Self-healing — Mg ions seal cut edges |
| Coating Consumption Rate | Standard | Slower, extends lifespan significantly |
| Suitability for Cut/Drilled Profiles | Requires edge repair | No touch-up needed — self-healing takes care of it |

The service life of ZAM steel depends on the coating weight (g/m²) and the corrosivity of the environment (per ISO 12944). Below is a summary based on industry data and long-term testing:
Standard ZAM (general)
20–30 years
Typical for normal atmospheric environments; suitable for building, solar, and agricultural applications.
High-performance ZAM (e.g., Jingang)
Up to 30 years
Offers 30-year warranty; neutral salt-spray test >9,248 hours.
Premium international grades (e.g., Magnelis® ZM310)
25-year warranty
Actual life depends on exposure; coating weight is critical.
Extreme environment (C5) with high coating weight (>600 g/m² ≈ 85μm)
~25 years
To achieve 25 years in severe corrosion, a heavier coating (≥275 g/m² or more) is required — site-specific assessment recommended.
⚠ Important: In practice, the overall system life also depends on fasteners, sealants, and installation quality — which is why we recommend a holistic design approach.
Independent salt-spray tests have proven that ZAM outperforms conventional GI by 5 to 20 times under the same coating weight. This means a lighter coating can achieve the same lifespan as a much heavier GI coating, saving material and cost.
This is ZAM's most distinctive feature. When the steel is cut, drilled, or scratched, magnesium ions migrate to the exposed edge and form a dense, protective film that seals the wound and prevents rust propagation. This eliminates the need for time-consuming and expensive edge-repair treatments — a huge advantage for on-site fabrication and assembly.
Aluminium provides a stable passivation layer. Zinc offers cathodic protection. Magnesium slows the consumption of the coating while enhancing the barrier at edges and cross-sections. Together, these three elements create a coating that is tougher, longer-lasting, and more reliable than any single-metal or dual-metal system.
As with GI and Galvalume, the coating weight (e.g., AZM150 = 150 g/m²) directly governs lifespan. For structural applications, we recommend ≥275 g/m² for extended durability, especially in coastal or industrial zones.
Even with ZAM's superior performance, achieving over 25 years in C5 or higher corrosivity categories still requires a sufficiently high coating weight and possibly additional protection measures. We always conduct a site-specific corrosion evaluation per ISO 12944 before finalising specifications.
The terms "zinc-magnesium-aluminium" and "zinc-aluminium-magnesium" refer to the same family of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coatings. The exact composition may vary between manufacturers, but all share the same core benefits.
